Preparing for turbulant times

With the way the World economy is right now there is no telling exactly how bad things are going to get in the future and how much it will effect us all. Even in an industry that seems secure things can change very quickly and security can quickly collapse. Rather than worry about it and start letting fear set in now is the time to really get yourself prepared.

Update your resume
Your resume is something that only gets a good updating when you need a job. Save yourself some time, frustration and anxiety by having your skill sets updated should you need to start looking for a job unexpectedly. Also be sure to really dig deep and highlight your experiences and skills. You can also create a few different resumes for different jobs or positions. Your resume is a marketing device for you, so don’t sell yourself short.

Another must is to network in your community. The more people you market yourself to the better chances of success. I use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn extensively to do just that. Not only is it nice to meet new and interesting people but you become resources for one another in your personal and professional life. So if you don’t have accounts on these major networks I strongly encourage you climb on board. In addition to the large social network sites look for smaller niche networks in your area of expertise. A couple friends and I created one specifically for Columbus OH called Majelly.com that helps our local community network and get word out about local events. These little gems are great places to quickly network and find things going on in your area.
