Starting next month AT&T will be offering their 3G MicroCell at the cost of $150. The MicroCell is a device that will help you get better signal on your AT&T 3G device. Places like your home or office where reception may not less than desirable.
It works like this. You plug the 3G MicroCell into a broadband connection (Cable or DSL) and configure the device so that only authorized devices can use the MicroCell. You can allow family and friends to connect via the MicroCell. Coverage of the MicroCell is approx 5,000 square feet.
AT&T is also offering a unlimited talk plan for an extra $19 a month for all calls started on the MicroCell. Notice I said all calls started on the MicroCell. So lets say you have a MicroCell at home. You make a call while your phone is getting its signal from the MicroCell. When you leave your house the signal is passed to a cell tower. As long as you have the unlimited MicroCell plan any call started from the MicroCell is billed accordingly even if you are passed to a cell tower.
This all sounds good to me especially since I had considered getting a cell repeater which was going to cost between $700 – $1500. But I’m sure there are going to be many angry customers that will argue that they should receive a MicroCell on AT&T’s dime. Right? I mean when you signed that 2 year contract and canceled your other carrier so that you could get that shiny new iPhone you never thought service inside your home was going to be so bad. So what do you think? Should AT&T give you a MicroCell or are you just glad there is something available to get better reception?
